At an altitude of 1,256m, Dobbiaco is known as the “Gateway to the Dolomites”. The town is spread over a high plateau and is open and sunny in summer months, with spectacular views of the Dolomite range.
It is in Dobbiaco that the composer Gustav Mahler spent the summers from 1908 to 1910: it is here that he composed the Ninth and Tenth Symphonies (the latter one left unfinished), and the famous Song of the Earth (“Das Lied von der Erde”). A plaque commemorating the composer can be seen at the Trenker House in the village.
During the First World War, the area around Dobbiacio was scene to intense fighting, due to its situation on the Austro-Italian border. Many historical remains can still be seen in the area.

Alan Kane –
Really enjoyed the trip to the Dolomites. Staying in Locatelli refugio alongside the Tre Cime was the highlight of the trip and a wonderful experience. The organisation by France Outdoors was excellent, every detail was taken care of. Our two guides Lucie and Hanz were very professional and very helpful. All in all a great trip.
Declan Coughlan –
What a fantastic trip the guys in France outdoors organized for us. I would not hesitate to recommend them to any hiking group planning on using their services.
From my very first contact with Vincent and describing what I was looking for, it was a pleasure to deal with the team. Vincent and his team tailored a hiking challenge to suit our needs. He even facilitated an external activity, Via Ferrata, for some of our group as we specifically requested it.
Our guides for the week were Lucie and Hans and I could not speak highly enough about these guys too. Lucie’s day to day organizing skills were exactly what we needed and Hans, as the experienced mountain guide, took care of us as if we were his family. His knowledge of the Dolimites shone through on every turn.
All members of our group were extremely satisfied and I have no hesitation in giving a Five Star review.
A big thank you to all at France Outdoors. — We will definitely be back again.
