Barcelonnette lies in the Ubaye valley in the heart of a wild and protected nature. It offers amazing landscapes from the Serre Ponçon lake blue water, Ubaye river wild white waters, green pastures, larch trees that turn golden yellow in autumn and the high peaks surrounding Barcelonnette like Chapeau de Gendarme, Tête de Louis XVI and the ones from Mercantour National Park.
You will be staying in the lively center town and discover the rich history of town. The “Mexican” villas, these beautiful middle-class homes built between 1880 and 1930, tell the story of the thousands of Ubayans who set off for adventure in America in the 19th century with the ambition of developing their know-how there, particularly in the textile industry. Some of them returned home with their fortunes made, and built these sumptuous villas as a testimony to their success.

Sun. 06th Oct.: ARRIVAL
Pick up at Nice Provence airport to match Aer Lingus flight EI 544 and transfer to Barcelonnette, approximately 3 hours transfer.
Arrive at the charming 2 star Le Grand hotel. This family run hotel is ideally located in the centre of Barcelonnette with a nice bar where local people stop for a drink at the terrace of the Cafe. Barcelonnette is a lovely town with rich history linked to emigration to Mexico.
Every day two levels of walk will be offered.

Mon. 07th Oct.: LET’S DISCOVER THE REGION!
From Barcelonnette walk from the hotel in the direction of the south faces, discover the local villages on an easy track. Very nice views of Barcelonnette and the mountains around.
Breakfast and dinner included. Lunch not included.

Tue. 08th Oct.: LOUIS THE XVIth HEAD.
Today, it is Revolution day! You will walk to “La Tête de Louis XVI” summit, to admire the view over Serre-Ponçon Lake. From Méolans, you will walk through the forests overhanging the Ubaye valley and join the summit.
Breakfast and dinner included. Lunch not included.

Wed. 09th Oct.: MARKET IN BARCELONETTE – OPTIONAL WALK
Stop by Barcelonette local market food and craft before heading to Le Lauzet to enjoy walks along and above the Ubaye river up to Serre Ponçon lake.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner not included.

Thu. 10th Oct.: MAGINOT LINE.
Today you will walk from Larche village to “Mallemort” pass or “Batterie de Viraysse” built to prevent Italian attacks. Magnificent views and probably meetings with the local sentinels: “les marmottes”!
Possibility to make it shorter (“Mallemort” pass only).
Breakfast included. Lunch and Dinner not included.

Fri. 11th Oct.: CHAPEAU DE GENDARME.
With this first walk you will enjoy the magnificent views over two valleys: Ubaye and Bachelard that overviews the Mercantour National Park.
Walking from Super Sauze resort to “Le Queyron” or to “Le Chapeau de Gendarme”, you are likely to meet one of the chamois or eagle living in those mountains.
Breakfast included. Lunch and Dinner not included.

Sat. 12th Oct.: EPERVIERE RIDGE.
For the last day, we propose a loop walk following a spectacular ridge! From “La Pare” hut, you will join “Les Orres” pass from where you will follow the “Epervières” ridge to “Les Pares” pass and go down to the hut a different way.
Breakfast and dinner included. Lunch not included.

Sun. 13th Oct.: FAREWELL!
Early transfer to Nice airport to match Aer Lingus EI 545 flight from Nice to Dublin.
Breakfast included.
