Itinerary – Walking Sierra de Guara

Day 1: ARRIVAL – Join Alquezar
Transfer from Barcelona airport to Alquezar, the base for our Spain walking holiday.
You can only be charmed by Alquezar, a village of rich cultural heritage set in stunning natural surroundings. Alquézar is in the province of Huesca, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve. It is the perfect place for sports like canyoning, hiking (more than 1400 m elevation possible), horse riding, and mountain biking. This village also has examples of rock art at the Vero River Cultural Park, designated World Heritage. Also outstanding are its castle, the Santa María la Mayor collegiate church (the region’s most visited monument) with its cloister of Romanesque capitals and its organ, along with many shrines.
You will stay in the family run hotel “Villa de Alquezar”. With Spacious rooms and a lot of character, this hotel is also perfectly located in Alquezar.
Dinner in “Meson del Vero” nice restaurant near the hotel.

Day 2 : WALK – Rio Vero – Meson de Sevil
Today to discover the region you will start from the hotel. The first gorges you will encounter is “Rio Vero”, flowing from North to South and through Alquezar. While you will walk up the Rio, the gorges will get very dramatic with huge limestone cliffs and remarkable quartzite rock formations. A very interesting feature of this walk will be to explore the remains of our human ancestors in the form of cave art. The Culture Park of the River Vero, with more than 60 painted caves, contains one of the most extraordinary collections of Prehistoric Cave Art. Here in the Sierra de Guara, in a small geographic area and in a spectacular environment, are gathered all the classic styles of the Prehistoric Iberian Peninsula: Paleolithic, Levantine and Schematic art.

Day 3 : WALK – Rodellar – Gorgas Negras
In the morning, short bus transfer to Rodellar and the “Gorgas Negras”. Rodellar is one of the most famous spot in the Europe for Rock climbing and may be you will see one of these spiders species around there today! You will hike from Rodellar Village to the beautiful Mascun Canyon, heart of the Natural Park. This superb area is further enhanced by one of Europe’s greatest vulture colonies. It is possible for the most experienced and fit hiker to reach Alquezar from Rodellar.

Day 4 : WALK – Vadiello – Tozal de Guara
In the morning, short bus transfer to the region of Vadiello and its large lake. In this area you will be amazed by rocks shaped by the erosion. There are many monasteries around and the walk will go by the Frachinito ridge, Pico de Mondinero and obviously Tozal de Guara. Tozal de Guara is the higest peak of the Sierra 2077m and offers majestic views over this part of the Pyrenees and to the glorious Monte Perdido/Mont Perdu, a UNESCO site located where France meets Spain.

Day 5 : Free Day
You can then just relax and enjoy Alquezar or take part of an optional activity below. In particular you can visit Barbastro, a rich historic town. There, enjoy a visit of the cathedral (16th century), declared a Historic-Artistic Heritage, which is surrounded by the Archaeological Garden, with valuable artefacts from the 12th-18th centuries. The Diocesan Museum, the Episcopal Palace, the house of Argensola, the City Hall, the church and fountain of San Francisco, the Baselga house (16th century), and the San Julián compound all hold artistic treasures that themselves narrate the history of Barbastro.

On option enjoy a day trip to Barbastro: Bus service or Taxi.
On option take a tough / Challenging guided hike in the Sierra.
On option try Canyoning (descending/abseiling the rivers).
On option try Rock climbing or Via Ferrata with an instructor.

Day 6 : WALK – Monte Perdido – Pena Montanesa
Early start in morning to discover another majestic part of the Spanish Pyrenees. The “Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido”, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, is the oldest nature reserve in Spain, founded in 1918. It is spectacularly beautiful and offers a number of possibilities, including relatively gentle hikes to full-blown mountain challenging treks. Today you will immerse yourself in incredible landscape: the surrounding mountains, the river at your feet, and the snow-capped grey rock mountains.

Day 7 : WALK – Salto de Rodan / Val de Onsera
Today you will discover an old monastery of the XIIth century, the “Ermitage San Martin”. The area of Salto de Roldan is very popular for the bird watchers from all over Europe who want to observe Griffon (unique place in Europe) easy to watch there.

Day 8 : FAREWELL!!!
Early start to transfer to Barcelona airport.
