Morocco – Walk the Best of South Atlas

Dades valley – Fint Oasis – Todra – M’Goun – Jebel Saghrou
This fabulous 11 days private Tour is carefully designed to show you some of the most beautiful landscapes and must-see places the High Atlas mountains and Southern Morocco has to offer.
Incredibly rich in history, culture, natural heritage with a great diversity of scenery, this walking tour explores stunning mountains, striking oases and charming Berber villages.
Every day one level of walk will be offered equivalent to a C walk as per previous trips.
If we feel it is necessary during the trip we can add a second level of walk.
Group Size Min : 8 participants.
Airport: Fly to Marrakesh  (Ryanair outbound flight FR7378, Ryanair return FR7379) . Transfer time 30min.
Hotel on arrival in Marrakesh: Transfer to the Riad Amin hotel.

Level of walks:
Following the itinerary proposed , there will be on walk level led by one qualified international mountain leader and local guides.
Easier walk: The difficulty level will be of 8 km and 400 metres maximum and up to 4 to 5 hours walk including breaks.
If during the course of the trip we feel the need to introduce a second walk level we will do so.
Booking and deposit process:
A deposit of €557 per person should be transferred at the time of online registration and before end of July 2023. Once you paid the deposit you will receive a receipt and the invoice for the balance of payment.
If you have difficulties with online booking, do not hesitate to contact us as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
Supplements and bank fees will be paid with the balance.
The balance of the price of the trip should be transferred no later than 30 days prior to the start date of 11th January 2024.

Morocco – Walk the Best of South Atlas

Thu. 11th Jan.: ARRIVAL – Marrakesh
Ryanair flight from Dublin to Marrakesh FR 7378 (not included) arriving at 9:55 pm and welcome by Vincent from France Outdoors at Marrakesh airport. Transfer to a local hotel 30 min from the airport on the direction of following day transfer. Short briefing on the bus.
Hotel: Riad Amin.
No dinner provided. Fri. 12th Jan.: Marrakesh – Ounila Valley – Ouarzazate
Late morning, we will set off and drive through green valleys with pink laurels then we will reach Tichka pass (2260m) and enter the mineral environment of the Atlas mountains to the village of Anmiter where will stop for a late lunch (2h30 min transfer). From there you will enjoy a walk in the Ounila valley of about 3 to 4 hours. The Ounila valley was for a long time a caravan route for African traders on their way to northern Morocco and Europe. Transfer to your hotel Dar Chamaa near Ouarzazate area after the walk (2 hr).

Note: in the winter, it is possible in exceptional circumstances (never happened in the last 10 years) that the Tichka pass would be closed because of the snow for 24 hours. Normally the road is cleared very quickly after a snow fall. In this very unlikely event an alternative road will be used adding to the transport time. Sat. 13th Jan.: Fint Oasis
In the morning, transfer to the valley and Oasis of Fint (1 hr). Fint in Berber means hidden, it’s exactly what it sounds like, a lush and green paradise in the middle of a dry rocky desert and surrounded by lunar and fascinating volcanic rocks that belong to the Anti-Atlas mountains. Here, we set off a full day hike across many Berber villages and stunning landscapes of this beautiful natural spot among the palm groves, pomegranate trees, almonds and oleanders.
Transfert back to Ouarzazate area after the walk (1 hr).

Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner. Sun 14th Jan.: Ouarzazate – Assak a / Mount Goun – Boumalne Dades
In the morning early breakfast and depart towards the valley of Ikamdoulen and Imi-n-Oulawen, situated North East of Ouarzazate. Once crossing the small town of Toundout, we continue into the Mountains of Mgoun and drive through a winding mountain road until we reach the picturesque valley of Ikamdoulen, the trek starting point (2 hrs transfer). Our day walk we pass through the Berber villages of Assaka and Tighzourine heading for the plateau of Azib Taterart, where the Imghrane nomadic tribes spend the summer season with their herds of sheep, goats, mules, camels and donkeys. En-route we may encounter a many isolated shepherds’ shelters and nomadic encampments. Reaching the pass of Tizi-n-Routt at 2800 metres above sea level, we admire incredible views over the M’goun mountains and further south towards the Jebel Saghrou range.
Transfer to Boumalne Dades (2 hours transfer) and the Ksar Sultan dades for we will stay for couple of nights.
Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner. Mon 15th jan.: Trek in the Dades valley
Transfer of less than 1 hour in the morning to the Dades valley. Today between the drive and the day walk you will see superb views, hundreds of Kasbahs and charming Berber villages lining the route, winding through stunning desert landscapes, beautiful mountains, palm groves and lush green valleys. We visit the spectacular Dades Gorge and its impressive natural formation of rocks known by locals as the “Monkey footprints” where wind, water and geological mayhem have taken millions years of natural erosion to shape some of the Southern Morocco’s most spectacular landscapes.
1 hour transfer back to Ksar Sultan Dades.
Tonight special diner in the Dades valley with local music
Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner. Tue 16th jan.: Jebel Saghro
Today you will take what you need for2 days walk and for 1 night in another hotel. Main luggages will stay in Ksar Sultan Dades.
Transfer of 1h15 min in the morning to Jebel Saghro where the High Atlas and Sahara meet. The wild volcanic mountain range of Jebel Saghrou is a truly paradise destination for hiking. Considered since the mists of time to be home of the nomadic people of Ait Atta tribe, Jebel Saghrou boasts an astonishingly picturesque mountain in southern Morocco which is blessed with a wonderful climate. Your day walk will take place in lunar landscapes, rocky plateaux of volcanic pillars and deep canyons. 1h15 min transfer to Tinerhir, at the entrance of Todra valley where next day walk will take place.
Night in the Auberge Atlas in Tinerhir in the palm grove.
Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner. Wed. 17th Jan.: Walk in Todra Gorges and Oasis
After breakfast depart on exciting journey into the Sahara desert. We will walk the Todra oasis and explore the breathtaking Todra Gorge. This 1000ft gorge is hemmed in on all sides by vertical limestone cliffs and is called Morocco’s Grand Canyon.
(1h15min) transfer back to Ksar Sultan Dades.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Thu. 18th Jan.: Hike in the valley of Roses and across the M’Goun valley
Transfer of 1 hour in the morning to the Rose valley. During your walk you will explore the valley of Roses and many Berber villages. Nestled between the foothills of central High Atlas and Jebel Saghrou Mountain range, the Valley of Roses offers a great buffet diversity of delightfully grandiose natural beauty and presents an opportunity to experience firsthand the inspiring culture of the region. Home to some of the Morocco’s finest mountain scenery, this beautiful lush green valley is truly one of the best preserved valleys in Southern Morocco.
(1h15min) transfer back to Boumalne Dades to Ksar Sultan Dades.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Fri. 19th Jan.: Meet the nomads and transfer to Skoura
Special day for your last day, after a transfer of about 1 hour to a deeper part of Dades valley where you will meet the nomads and discover of a little of life in the mountains.
Stretching from the Atlas Mountains on the northern border with Algeria to the Jebel Saghro in the heart of Morocco, the Dades Valley is a remarkable trip through this region’s history and culture. From peaceful oases besides the River to ancient Kasbahs, the Valley offers a vast range of experiences that are perfect for anyone wanting to truly experience Morocco! Stretching through much of South-West Morocco, the landscape of the Dades Valley is a remarkable mix of dry, orange-coloured stone and lush green wildlands. Much of this variation can be found across the region, but there are a few highlights which we’ll come onto below!

Sat. 20th Jan.: Transfer to Marrakesh
Transfer in the morning to Marrakesh via Tichka pass (4 hours). Either stop for lunch on the way between the two towns or in Marrakesh.
Visit Marrakesh, nicknamed the Red City as the Medina in encircled by red ramparts, enjoy its lively ambience, visit some of its monuments or enter one of its peaceful gardens (Majorelle or Ménera garden).
Stay in Riad “les sources Berbères Marrakech”.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Sun 21st Jan.: Farewell !
Early transfer to the airport in the morning to catch you flight to Dublin Ryanair FR 7379 (not included).

      Just home from the ten day trip of a lifetime! We were a group of 11, and everyone enjoyed every minute of the whole experience. We had excellent guides in Mouha and Vincent, and although it all sounds hectic con the itinerary, it was easy going and relaxing. Would recommend heartily to anyone interested in a different type of walking trip, we were in out of the way places, off the beaten track and it was a super experience. The Moroccan people were very warm and welcoming, the food was delicious . weather was perfect….a little piece of heaven. Sincere thanks to Vincent and Florence for the encouragement to go and for putting such a package together for our group.
