Greece – Mount Olympus & Meteora Hiking Holiday – Itinerary

Sat. 27th Sep. : Start Thessaloniki
Pick up at Thessaloniki airport (Flight Ryanair FR 1390 arriving at 14:00 in Thessaloniki), welcome by our guide and transfer to the 4-star Mythic Summer Hotel in Paralia along the coast (1h30 transfer). Mount Olympus range offers plenty of walks options, with 52 peaks and its deep gorges. Even if the Mount Olympus itself summits at 2948m (higher mountain in Greece) and requires mountaineering experience, you will enjoy the National park at its best. The national park honours and protects history, culture, and nature. It is the home of the Twelve Gods of antiquity and of course the most famous god, Zeus.

Sun. 28th Sep. : Hike up Krevatia Hut – Village of Petra.
After a bus transfer (1h15min) in the morning, we will explore the north side of Olympus National Park from above the village of Petra. You will get to Krevatia Refuge. This hut at a little more than 1000m high offers a panoramic view over the peaks and canyons of the north side of Mount Olympus.
1H15 min transfer back to your 4-star Mythic Hotel.

Mon. 29th Sep. : Enipeas gorges
1 hour transfer in the morning to Priona. You will hike the Enipeas Gorge, a wonderful trail in the foothills of Mt.Olympus renowned for its beautiful densely vegetated landscape. The route is quite long, but the varied geological features, the small lakes with crystal waters and the sheer mountain slopes provide a rare beauty and are entirely rewarding. You will pass by Agios Dionysios monastery. The Monastery was founded in 1542 by St. Dionysios who created a monument of rare architectural and aesthetic beauty, ideally integrated into the natural environment; built as a fortress, from stone and wood, on a natural fortified plateau. The Monastery was destroyed in 1943 by the Germans, it was rebuilt 5km Northeast of the old one. Return (1 hour) to hotel 4* Mythic Summer Hotel.

Optional climb to Monte Olympus day 1: Transfer to the village of Priona and begin your ascent to hut Spilios Agapitos (2100 m), long and steady climb (1000 3 hours 30 min). The first part of the walk is in the forest and then the view opens up to stunning mountain views. Stay in mountain hut multisharing for the night. No food included but available at the hut.
Tue. 30th Sep. : Pierian Mountains – mountain of the Muses
Morning transfer to the Ski Center of Elatochori. 1h15 min transfer. North of Olympus and as a continuation of its ridge there are the Pieria Mountains, a verdant, extensive mountain range. The highest peak (“Flambouro”) reaches 2,188 meters, and the charm of the mountain comes mainly from its natural beauty and its amazing trails. According to mythology, the (“Pierides”) Muses were enchanted by the beauty of the mountain and chose it as their residence.
Return (1h15 min) to hotel 4* Mythic Summer Hotel.

Optional climb to Monte Olympus day 2: wake up early, walk to Scala (3 hours, hiking on track, steep the last one hour).
Then the scrambling starts all the way to the top, around 1h30 min. The descent to Scala from the top is by the same route, and probably more challenging as some parts are steep. But taking time and with the guides and the rope, it is fine. To save a too long descent, you will walk down to a ski resort on the West side of the mountain , called Vrisopoules. The transfer by minibus back to the hotel is quite long, 2 hours, but the descent to the ski resort  is a much better option.
Wed. 1st Oct. : Transfer to Meteora – Kalambaka
Transfer to Kalambaka in the Meteora (1h45). Kalambaka is located at the foot of the Meterora mountains. With 8500 inhabitants, this town is the ideal location to explore the Meteora UNESCO site that hosts the 6 orthodox Christian monasteries built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders. You will stay in the 4 star Hotel Divani Meteora where you will be able to relax by the pool after your hiking days. Free afternoon in Kalambaka.

Thu. 2nd Oct. : Hike Meteora
Short 15 min transfer and today you will explore the Meteora site, visiting some of the monasteries. Of the 24 Orthodox Christian monasteries built historically, most are now nothing more than ruins, and only 6 of them are still in use and accessible to tourists who come to explore them. Accessible by stone stairs, some have more steps than others! All offer stunning views.
Return to Hotel 4* Divani Meteora (15 min).

Fri. 3rd Oct. : Hike Pertouli ski resort area
Transfer in the morning 1 hour to Pertouli, the Garden of Eden.
A complete different landscape that embraced by the souther, slopes of the Pindus range. Thousands of square metres of lush vegetation, natural springs, rushing rivers and seasonal lakes create a stunning sight.
Return to Hotel 4* Divani Meteora (1 hour).

Sat. 4th Oct. : Transfer to Thessaloniki airport
Night departure for Thessaloniki (3h transfer) to catch your Ryanair flight FR 1391 leaving Thessaloniki at 05:45 to Dublin.
