Walking Holidays France : Alps
France is well known for its mountain ranges, and the Alps are the ideal location for a walking holiday. The Tour du Mont Blanc trek and Mont Blanc are popular with mountain lovers the world over ; but you may prefer something more unique in the Queyras Natural Park, the jewel in the crown of the Southern French Alps, or the remote and spectacular Ubaye Valley, one of our favourite destinations in the French Alps that is local to our office here at France Outdoors. The French National Parks in their natural beauty provide a spectacular setting for walking and hiking trips ; the Ecrins National Park, the Vanoise National Park and the Mercantour National Park are all in the French Alps and provide a spectacular setting for your walking holidays.
Walking Holidays France : Pyrenees
The Pyrenees mountain range extends almost 500km from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, on the border between France and Spain. The French Pyrenees rise steeply from the surrounding land in Western France, with wooded foothills giving way to high mountain pastures, rising to above 3000m in particular in the Pyrenees National Park which is at an average height of over 2500m and rises up to the Vignemale peak at 3298m. A go-to visit in the Pyrenees is the village of Gavarnie base for our walking holiday on the GR10 hiking trail, one of France’s long-distance Grande Randonnée walking routes. In the central Pyrenees, St Lary is the base for our walking holiday in the Pyrenees National Park, with walks in the spectacular Nature reserve and by high mountain peaks and azure lakes.
Walking Holidays France : Provence & Côte d’Azur
Who can talk of French walking holidays with mentioning two emblems of Southern France, the Côte d’Azur or French Riviera on the Mediterranean coast, and the lavendar fields of quiet Provence inland, walking destinations par excellence. The Alpine mountain chain descends to the Mediterranean in the Alpes-Maritimes department, above Cannes, Nice and Menton, with many spectacular walks overlooking the surprisingly blue waters of the Mediterranean, on the border with Italy and with the island of Corsica visible on the horizon. Walk around Menton, the Cap Martin or Saint Jean-Cap-Ferrat Peninsulas, and to the mountain village of Sospel in the Mercantour National park – mountains and coast in the same trip!
Or take a walk through fragrant lavendar fields or grape-laden vineyards in sunny Provence, in an area untouched by mass tourism where the traditional provençal way of life still holds sway. Visit lavendar sellers and local markets, walk on gently rolling paths and break in stone Provençal villages to take a coffee on a shady café terrace on a tree-lined square.
Walking Holidays France: Culture & off the beaten track
Visit the unique cultural area of the Basque Country on the border between France and Spain, in the medieval fishing village of Getaria, with an unforgettable cultural experience and walks on the neighbouring Compostela trail and in San Sebastian.
Or the island of Corsica in the sparkling Mediterranean, a hikers paradise with soaring paths and endless vistas above perched villages and quiet harbours. Stay in Calvi and walk to Ile Rousse, Balagne or Revellata in the garden of the Mediterranean.

Vincent, co founder of France Outdoors, is first and foremost a qualified mountain guide and guides a large part of our trips himself. When he’s not guiding, he calls on some of our team of English speaking local guides. On our blog you will find some advice and tips on preparing your holidays and choosing your destinations.
